Cylinder Storage

Working safely with Gas Cylinders

Gas cylinders are large, heavy and relatively unstable due to the small base-diameter to height ratio. There are a few simple rules to follow to ensure on-site safety:

When not in use, store gas cylinders closed and in a secure, well-ventilated area, ideally in a designated cylinder cage with appropriate signage.

Never store cylinders in an occupied building, unventilated rooms, underground rooms or in areas accessible to the general public. Ideally store on a level, well drained surface.

Store and use cylinders in an upright position and provide a means of preventing cylinders from falling if accidentally bumped.

Ensure full and empty cylinders are separated for easy identification. Segregate cylinders by the properties of the gas ensuring that LPG is separated from all cylinders by a minimum of 3 metres (or a firewall).
