WorldSkills UK has announced over 400 talented apprentices and students have advanced to the national finals. This includes the Welding Competition, which has been sponsored by Air Products for over 20 years. Competitors have participated in regional competitions at their local colleges, training provider centres, workplaces, or online. Through their exceptional performance, they have secured a place in the WorldSkills UK national finals, which will take place in Greater Manchester from 19 – 22 November.
This year, the finalists will compete in over 40 skills, including disciplines such as a 3D digital game art, additive manufacturing, welding, and landscaping.
The competition is designed to test contestants skills in the three main Welding processes: Manual Metal Arc (MMA) Metal Active Gas (MAG) Tungston Inert Gas (TIG).
The competition has 3 stages; each stage gradually builds up to challenge the contestants to develop their welding skills, At each stage the contestant is required to complete a number of welding test pieces in carbon steel Aluminium and Stainless steel in a variety of welding positions.
The competition is aimed at Trainee/Apprentice welders working and/or training in the welding industry at level 2-3 or higher level. The test pieces are marked to a set criterion based on BS EN ISO 5817.
The National Finals take place at Rochdale Training Tuesday 21 – Thursday 23 November
