Pool water treatment:
Switching from chlorine to carbon dioxide

In our previous blog, we discussed eliminating the risks associated with using chlorine for treating swimming pool water and the benefits of using carbon dioxide (CO₂) as an alternative. In this blog, we’ll explore how feasible it is to switch from a chlorine system to a CO₂ sanitation system, like Air Products CarboStore™ solution.

A safer alternative to chlorine

Let’s recap on the benefits of using CO₂ for treating swimming pool water.

Switching to CO₂ from chlorine eliminates the use of harsh chemicals, meaning the side effects and potential risks of burns, skin and respiratory irritation from overexposure to chlorine is eliminated for bathers.

Eliminating harsh chemicals also removes the risk to employees of spillage and handling injuries, in line with COSHH legislation.

CO₂ swimming pool water treatment systems such as CarboStore™ from Air Products operate independently, removing any requirement for manual handling or management upon delivery.

The CarboStore™ system works by diffusing CO₂ at a gradual and consistent rate, helping to keep the pH level stable in the pool water.

When the tank is running low on CO₂, the integrated telemetry system will send a signal to Air Products for a refill. As the tank refill point is sited externally to the pool building, deliveries are conducted by Air Products, without interaction from pool staff - even out of hours. This makes CO₂ water treatment systems like CarboStore™ a safer, more efficient and more productive solution than chlorine.

How you can make the switch

Now that you know why you should be using CO ₂ over chlorine, let’s go over some of the factors to consider before making the switch to a CarboStore™ system.

Accessibility

To enable gas to be delivered safely and effectively when notified by the telemetry system, the external fill point needs to be located in an area that is accessible for a small truck and a maximum of 30 metres from the CarboStore™ tank.

The CarboStore™ tank for swimming pool pH control and sanitation measures 1650mm x 610mm and therefore requires an adequately sized plant room to accommodate the tank, ancillary equipment and access for the installation. The tank can also be installed externally and secured in a cage.

Safety distances

Importantly, the CarboStore™ tank and external fill point need to be located a safe distance away from certain areas, infrastructure and public spaces. This helps maintain safety of employees and the public whilst reducing the risks of damage to the CarboStore™ system.

Existing infrastructure

At Air Products, our national team of specialist engineers can take on the required engineering responsibilities to ensure a smooth transition from chlorine to a CO₂ water treatment system.

The CarboStore™ system is located within the pool plant room or in an external cage, requiring a 13-amp twin socket for powering the CO₂ monitoring and uses a 5G sim card for the telemetry system, that is battery powered with a life of five years. An injection diffuser, along with solenoid and flow meter assembly, is also required. If the current site doesn’t have either of these, they can be purchased from a swimming pool equipment supplier. As can be seen in the image below, Air Products provides all the other elements required to operate a CarboStore™ system, including the tank, CO₂ detector, CO₂ repeater, isolating valve and external fill point.
